The journey

Safari Overview

Safari Overview

This programme is designed around the scale and remoteness of southern Tanzania, where the safari experience is less about rushing through a checklist and more about combining wilderness, varied activities and lower vehicle density. Over 7 days, the planned route is Dar es Salaam, Nyerere, Nyerere, Mikumi, Mikumi, Ruaha, Ruaha, Dar es Salaam. It is especially suitable for travellers comfortable with an adventurous overland southern circuit. Accommodation examples are selected for practical location and comfort, but the final property must be confirmed against availability, season and the guest's budget. The website price is a planning benchmark, not a promise for every date or group size.

Route: Dar es Salaam - Nyerere - Nyerere - Mikumi - Mikumi - Ruaha - Ruaha - Dar es Salaam

Start: Dar es Salaam | End: Dar es Salaam | Duration: 7 Days

Travel style: Private comfort safari
Best for: Travellers comfortable with an adventurous overland southern circuit
Season: Year-round

Website price: From USD 2,880 per person. This is a planning benchmark, generally based on four adults sharing comfort accommodation in lower or shoulder-rate periods. Final pricing depends on travel dates, group size, confirmed accommodation, park fees, flight sectors and supplier availability.

Operational Note

One long transfer day is unavoidable in the road version. Offer a flight upgrade for guests who prioritise comfort.

Accommodation Confirmation

Accommodation names in this itinerary are recommended examples used to show the intended standard and geography of the route. A property is not guaranteed until availability has been checked, the room category and meal plan have been agreed, and the reservation has been confirmed in writing. If a named property is unavailable, Tamri International may propose a comparable alternative in a location that protects the itinerary flow.

Wildlife & Timing Reality

Wildlife sightings are natural and cannot be guaranteed. Driving times are approximate and may change because of road conditions, weather, park formalities, wildlife stops, border procedures or flight schedules. Great Migration itineraries are routed according to the most suitable Serengeti sector for the travel dates, but exact herd positions and river crossings are never guaranteed.

Day by day

Follow the rhythm of your safari.

Each day is designed with a gentle balance of movement, discovery and time to simply be in the wild.

Day 01

Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park

Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park
Day 01Nyerere National Park

Leave Dar es Salaam for Nyerere National Park by road or scheduled light aircraft according to the package. Road travel is long but scenic; flying saves time and is preferable in shorter premium itineraries. After arrival and check-in, begin an afternoon game drive or, where scheduled, a Rufiji River boat safari. Nyerere combines riverine habitat, lakes, woodland and broad wilderness, offering a very different experience from the northern circuit. Daily timing remains flexible within park regulations and confirmed logistics. The guide will adjust stops and pacing according to road conditions, wildlife activity and the guests' comfort while protecting the overall route plan.

Day 02

Nyerere Game Drive and Rufiji River Boat Safari

Nyerere Game Drive and Rufiji River Boat Safari
Day 02Nyerere National Park

Combine land-based wildlife viewing with a boat safari on the Rufiji River or connected waterways, subject to water level, weather and operator schedule. From the water you may see hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and animals approaching the banks, while the game drive covers inland habitats. This mix of activities is one of southern Tanzania's strongest selling points and distinguishes Nyerere from standard vehicle-only itineraries. Boat activity timing depends on local operating conditions, water level, weather and the confirmed lodge or activity provider. Wildlife sightings remain natural and cannot be guaranteed, but the river adds a valuable perspective that is different from a vehicle game drive.

Day 03

Nyerere to Mikumi

Nyerere to Mikumi
Day 03Mikumi National Park

Travel north-west from Nyerere toward Mikumi. This is a substantial road-transfer day and should not be presented as a short hop; road conditions can affect timing. Breaks are planned en route, and the late afternoon may allow a short Mikumi game drive if arrival is early enough. Mikumi's open floodplain habitat creates an accessible contrast to Nyerere and works well as a connecting park on a southern road circuit. Daily timing remains flexible within park regulations and confirmed logistics. The guide will adjust stops and pacing according to road conditions, wildlife activity and the guests' comfort while protecting the overall route plan.

Night accommodation: Camp Bastian Mikumi or Vuma Hills Tented Camp

Tonight’s stayCamp Bastian Mikumi
Day 04

Full Day in Mikumi National Park

Full Day in Mikumi National Park
Day 04Mikumi National Park

Spend the day exploring Mikumi's Mkata floodplain and surrounding woodland. Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, elephant, buffalo, lion and many bird species may be encountered. The road network allows a productive full-day game drive without constant long transfers. Picnic or lodge lunch is arranged according to the plan, and the afternoon continues through different habitats before returning to camp. The guide can adapt the day's game-drive rhythm to wildlife movement, road conditions, park rules and the guests' interests. Wild animals move freely, so the itinerary creates strong viewing opportunities without guaranteeing any specific sighting.

Day 05

Mikumi to Ruaha via Iringa

Mikumi to Ruaha via Iringa
Day 05Ruaha National Park

Depart Mikumi and travel toward Iringa and Ruaha. This is one of the longest road days in a southern overland circuit, so it should be marketed honestly as a transfer through changing landscapes rather than a full wildlife day. Stop for meals and comfort breaks, then continue to the Ruaha area. Travellers who prefer less driving can replace this sector with flight arrangements when schedules and budget allow. Daily timing remains flexible within park regulations and confirmed logistics. The guide will adjust stops and pacing according to road conditions, wildlife activity and the guests' comfort while protecting the overall route plan.

Night accommodation: Ruaha River Lodge or Mwagusi Safari Camp

Tonight’s stayRuaha River Lodge
Day 06

Full Day in Ruaha National Park

Full Day in Ruaha National Park
Day 06Ruaha National Park

Explore Ruaha, a vast and relatively quiet park characterised by baobabs, the Great Ruaha River system and a mix of eastern and southern African wildlife. Elephant, lion, giraffe, kudu, antelope and diverse birdlife are among the possibilities. The lower vehicle density is part of Ruaha's appeal, but wildlife can be spread over large areas, making an experienced local guide especially valuable. Use the full day for patient game viewing and photography. The guide can adapt the day's game-drive rhythm to wildlife movement, road conditions, park rules and the guests' interests. Wild animals move freely, so the itinerary creates strong viewing opportunities without guaranteeing any specific sighting.

Day 07

Ruaha to Dar es Salaam / Zanzibar by Air

Ruaha to Dar es Salaam / Zanzibar by Air
Day 07Dar es Salaam

Enjoy a final morning activity if flight timing permits, then transfer to the airstrip for the scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. Light-aircraft times can change with routing and passenger loads, so onward international connections should have a safe buffer. The safari ends on arrival unless an airport transfer or beach extension is included. Scheduled light-aircraft times, routing and baggage allowances are subject to the operating airline and can change. The final travel documents should confirm the exact airstrip, reporting time, baggage limit and transfer arrangements.

Night accommodation: No overnight - package ends after the stated transfer/activity.
