Mount Meru

A rewarding volcanic mountain trek through forest and open ridges, with wide views toward Kilimanjaro and the Arusha National Park landscape.

Mountain overview

A beautiful warm-up for the high mountains

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and one of East Africa’s most rewarding short mountain journeys. The trail starts among forest wildlife in Arusha National Park, then climbs through moorland and ash-covered ridges toward Socialist Peak. It works beautifully as a stand-alone adventure or as measured preparation before Kilimanjaro.

Questions before you go

Yes. It offers useful altitude exposure and a multi-day trekking rhythm while still being a memorable summit in its own right.

The final ascent is long and starts early, with exposed ridge sections. A sensible pace, good footwear and guide support are important.

Most itineraries use the mountain huts on the route, with meals and logistics arranged in advance.
